Description
Beautiful, colorful blooms on a Martha Washington geranium.
Martha washington geraniums are not perennials. They are treated as garden bedding plants and also as flowering gift plants. they tend to make poor bedding plants because they prefer cooler conditions in order to grow and set flowers well. During the heat of the summer they tend to not flower as do bedding geraniums. There are some newer cultivars that don't require as cool a temperrature to set flower buds. The martha washingtons are also refered to as regal geraniums and they are not true geraniums. they are pelargoniums. If you wish to save your plant and try to rebloom it there are specific conditions needed in order to do this. In the fall before frost bring your plant indoors cutting it back severely and if needed repot. Water lightly and syringe the tops to encourage new growth. Keep in very bright light. In order to set flower buds the plant will need to be give night temperatures of 50-52 degrees with day temperatures of about 65. High light is also necessary but it is the cool temperatures that set buds. Avoid overwatering and donot fertilize. You may get it to reflower by doing this.
