Description
This lovely Federal style home is located in Kenosha, Wisconsin not far from Lake Michigan.
The Federal, or Adam, style dominated the American architectural landscape from roughly 1780 to 1840, having evolved from Georgian, the principal design language of the colonial period. Fundamentally, it was the comparatively progressive European ideas about architecture that prompted this American change in taste. Indeed, many historians today think of the Federal style as merely a refinement of the Georgian style, a view easily justified by a close comparison of the two. In general, the term Federal connotes that period in American history when our Federal system of governance was being developed and honed. More specifically, it refers to the buildings that went up during the ensuing construction boom in which designers readily incorporated styling variants popular in Europe.
Typically, a Federal-style house is a simple square or rectangular box, two or three stories high and two rooms deep. Some structures have been made larger, modified with projecting wings or attached dependencies, or even both.
Symmetry, simplicity and elegance sum up the homes that were popular in the nation's earliest decades.
The earliest decades of United States history are sometimes referred to as the Federal Period, and one of the dominant architecture designs of that era shares the same name. Federal-style homes embrace simplicity and symmetry and carry elements of the Greek Revival form of architecture. Federal architecture was popular between about 1780 and 1820.
Federal homes can still be found in most east coast cities, especially the northeastern seaboard, and many of its design principles still apply today. Federal design was not limited to homes or even government buildings.
